Paleontology is a branch of geology focused on study of remnants of ancient live forms preserved in rocks. It can generally be divided in macro- and micropaleontology.  The SEM is being employed in both branches. It allows study of fossilized tissues and bones regarding the macropaleontology. The SEM also allows detailed study of microfossils (algae, foraminiferas, spores etc.) allowing their proper classification.
